    • • April 19, Volkswagen Group China, together with its joint ventures Shanghai Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen, celebrated the delivery of 20 million cars to Chinese customers.
    • • May 7, the Volkswagen Group is expanding its production capacity in China, with the groundbreaking for FAW-Volkswagen Foshan plant phase II.

    • • November 3, Construction of the new Volkswagen vehicle plant in Qingdao, East China, kicked off.
    • • November 4, inauguration of a component plant of the 100% wholly-owned Volkswagen subsidiary, Volkswagen Automatic Transmission (Tianjin) Co., Ltd., in Tianjin for the production of dual-clutch gearboxes (DSG). Annual capacity is 450,000 gearboxes, to be expanded to 1.2 million units by 2016.
    • • November 18, Volkswagen Group China announces to fund 50 million RMB to charity in China. The funding will further support raising awareness for child safety, reconstruction efforts, junior football and education.

    • • October 24, Shanghai Volkswagen's new plant in Ningbo starts vehicle production. Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of Volkswagen AG and Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG as well as President and CEO Volkswagen Group China inaugurated the new plant together with Hu Maoyuan, Chairman of SAIC Motor Corporation Ltd, and Chen Hong, SAIC Motor President and Vice-Chairman.
    • • November 20, Volkswagen Group China announced the launch of the Volkswagen Group Child Safety Initiative, partnering with its two joint-venture companies Shanghai Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen and engaging six Volkswagen Group brands: Volkswagen, Audi, SKODA, SEAT, Porsche and Bentley.

    • • May 21, FAW-Volkswagen's Technical Development Automotive Safety Centre is completed.
    • • May 28, Shanghai Volkswagen holds a signing and ground-breaking ceremony for its Xinjiang Project.

    • • July 26, the Shanghai Volkswagen Yizheng plant starts production. This plant is designed for annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles, with a workforce of 3,700 employees.
    • • August 31, a foundation-laying ceremony for the Volkswagen Automatic Transmission (Tianjin) Co, Ltd, is held.
    • • September 21, the new generation of Beetle launches in Shanghai.

    • • The New Lavida, an A-segment notchback saloon produced by SAIC VOLKSWAGEN, makes its debut at Auto China.
    • • The New Santana produced by SAIC VOLKSWAGENmakes its world debut in Wolfsburg. The first generation had been launched 31 years previously, before the model started its success story in China, with almost 4 million vehicles sold from 1982 onwards.

    • • March 30, Volkswagen Group China launches its Powertrain Strategy, committing the company to reducing fuel consumption and emissions by more than 20% by 2010 (compared with 2005 levels) for the entire fleet produced by FAW-Volkswagen and Shanghai Volkswagen; Volkswagen FAW Engine (Dalian) Company begins series production.

    • • FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd.(FAW-Volkswagen) was officially established in 1991 as a joint venture between Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, AUDI AG and FAW Group Co., Ltd.. As of November 2018, FAW holds a 60 percent stake, the Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft25 percent, VCIC 10 percent, with AUDI AG holding the other 5 percent(4% are with in AUDI China which is 100% owned by Audi AG).

    • • February 17, the 10,000th Jetta of FAW-Volkswagen rolls off the assembly line.

    1995

    • • November 28, Shanghai Volkswagen is awarded ISO 9001 quality certification, becoming the first automaker to obtain the certification; the 500,000th Santana by Shanghai Volkswagen rolls off the assembly line.
    • • December 18, FAW-Volkswagen signs a technology transfer agreement with Audi AG, after which the joint venture begins production of Audi models.

    1996

    • • July, Shanghai Volkswagen formally establishes its R&D centre, the first R&D centre by a joint venture in China.

    • • May 18, Establishment of FAW-Volkswagen Sales Company, Ltd.
    • • May 30, a foundation-laying ceremony for Shanghai Volkswagen's proving ground, the first proving ground in China, is held.

    • • November, Initial contact is made between the Chinese government and Volkswagen AG when a Chinese government delegation visits Germany.
    • • The Volkswagen Group and representatives of the Chinese government agree on the local assembly of Volkswagen brand models in the Chinese mainland.

    1983

    • • April 11, the first China produced Volkswagen vehicle - the Santana - is successfully assembled in Shanghai.

    1985

    • • Start of operations for SAIC VOLKSWAGEN AUTOMOTIVE COMPANY LIMITED, Volkswagen AG holds a 40 percent stake and VCIC holds a 10 percent stake in the Sino-German joint venture with SAIC Motor Corporation Limited (SAIC Motor), which holds the remaining stake.
